EXHAUST & TURBO SYSTEMS
This is by far the most involved area of thermal management.
Why is the knowledge of TD so important to the understanding of thermal management of exhaust and turbo systems? Reason being is to control the direction of the heat. An exhaust manifold will be much hotter than the cylinder head. So the heat of the manifold will move towards the head so a thermal barrier is added to the exhaust flange. A turbo has extreme radiant heat that can damage accessories. A thermal barrier can be applied to keep the heat in the turbo.
Any heat source that you are trying to control, by either forming a barrier or a dispersant will be dictated by the result you are trying to achieve. At your request, I can give you a much more involved article on thermal barriers and dispersant.
